GRAVEYARD
[On the instant of your death, you're suddenly outside of your body - probably staring down at the remains it's become.
Yet, you're not alone. For all of you (except Szayel), a young man appears from behind you, his face set into a firm, yet sad, scowl. His shaggy strawberry blonde hair is pretty eye-catching, along with the black and white Shihakusho he wears and the large sword on his back, even as he gently tries to lead you back into the lobby and away from what was once your body. You can still clearly hear and see the living, if you want to try - but they can't see or hear you.
'Welcome to the world of the dead in this Resort,' he says, quietly. 'Looks like you're stuck here with the rest of us.'
He hands you a tablet, just like the one you had before. "You'll need this if you want to keep talking to them,' he explains, looking sad.
It looks like you've passed on, and yet...You still feel like you have a role to play in all of this.]

I don't think you quite understand, Kurosaki, how important and incredibly rare you are! I once thought I was the perfect organism, capable of regenerating indefinitely. But that clown was right about one thing -- I am far from perfect. You, Kurosaki Ichigo. [he points across the table to the young man, then takes a gulp of coffee] You are perfect. You are the pinnacle that I aim for, the most powerful being our world has to offer! I should thank you, profusely, for the new direction in my life. I had forgotten... the struggle, the work, the goal of always making oneself better... It is exhilarating....!

Lord Aizen is very smart, but remember that Hollow genetics and technology are my specialties. I also designed the Hollowfication virus it carried. [he holds his hand to his forehead dramatically] Just imagine how disappointed I was when I had heard it self-destructed after wasting its venom on a Quincy woman! But that ended up being serendipitous, didn't it? And now, my creation lives on in your Zanpakutou.

Szayel sets his coffee aside and removes Fornicaras from its saya. He runs a gloved finger along the well-oiled edge]
I call her a 'her', but Fornicaras has no soul of her own. No personality, no will, no memories or thoughts or desires. The zanpakutou of a Shinigami is... like a partner, isn't it? The zanpakutou of an Arrancar is just a tool -- a physical embodiment of what we left behind and how far we've come. There is no spirit to commune with.

So my zanpakuto really is something different in both worlds, huh? Shinigami and hollow, I mean.

Szayel reflects on Ichigo's wording for a moment, then smiles in a more genuine way than usual] That's a very poetic way to put it, Kurosaki -- you have a gift for words. But not inaccurate. [he nods] I believe the Visored's have the closest relationship, but even theirs are fundamentally different than yourself and Zangetsu. They became Hollowfied, hundreds of years after their initial forging -- Zangetsu was born that way. And the way that your zanpakutou was originally manifested without a base asauchi! You are one of a kind.

...I wonder if that's because I'm also part quincy? Ishida could just form a bow out of Reishi.

Creating spirit matter directly from reishi is something any soul can do, given the right tools and time and practice. But only the Quincy are able to do it from birth, with no practice. You made a sword because that's what was expected... but you probably could have manifested those particular powers as a bow, if you had wanted.
