Miasma mechanic - Round 5
What is Miasma?
Miasma is a Black Fog that can be generated by ghosts and parts of the house. Ghosts will have an Area of Effect that surrounds them, but quickly dissipate once the ghost has left - while fog generated by the house will be in grouped up clouds that hang in the air, but are more permanent.
What does Miasma do?
Upon walking into it, The living will experience different effects. Mostly, the fog will amplify negative thoughts and emotions, with the effect being greater the longer or more often they are exposed to it. Prolonged exposure (such as merely living in the house over time) will make it much more difficult to shake off the feelings, though it can be individually resisted.
There is also the potential for the living to experience traumatic memories of their past upon contact, where they will experience as if they're there once more. Of course, in real time, this experience only takes seconds.
There will be a note per week on the mingle post about the level of miasma exposure, but by the end of the experience, characters will be genuinely struggling against the effects due to long term exposure.
As an aside, Miasma does not force them to do horrible things, or will they ever act possessed due to it. It is merely meant to make arguments and fights and other such things easier to occur, and bring suffering to the living trapped there.
All of the emotions they feel are their own, if just merely brought to the surface and intensified.
LEVEL GUIDELINE
LEVEL 1: Minor irritation, and fights about little things are easier. Negative emotion in general is amplified only a little bit, and there are no other negative effects. Spells or rituals to clear them of magic will make them feel much better for a long period of time (1 day), though it will eventually fade.
LEVEL 2: Much quicker to the extremes of negative emotion, though it's still easily handled. It's more at the level of 'having a bad day' as opposed to the 'having minor bad moments' of level 1. At this level, healing magic begins to have less of an effect - an extremely strong spell would go to a moderately powerful one, and a moderately powerful one to a lower level one, and a low level one being the equivalent of being able to heal minor cuts and scrapes. Spells or rituals to clear them of magic will make them feel better (half a day), but for a shorter period of time.
LEVEL 3: Negative Emotion is constantly coming to the forefront - it can be pushed through, but it's very difficult - and visions of past trauma will intrusively flash up at times. Consider it like having 'A bad week,' with all the temper issues and feelings that come with that. Those with divine influence will begin to suffer along with everyone else at this point, as well. Magic and faith based spells will take another major hit, with only the most powerful spell going to a low level. Spells or rituals to clear them of magic will make them feel better, but for a shorter period of time, (half a day) and spells in general may begin to exhibit 'miasma-like' side effects.
LEVEL 4: The 'Had a bad month' equivalent. Characters Begin to feel overrun by their negative emotions, though how they manifest is entirely up to the character themselves. There are breaks of feeling 'normal', but these breaks tend to only last a day or two at the longest. Magic and faith based spells will be at the lowest level possible, and all magic, regardless of what it is, will always induce a Miasma-like effect. Spells or rituals to clear them of magic will make them feel better, but for a even smaller period of time (around 1-2 hours). When under intense negative emotion or lashing out at other people, Their irises will turn dark purple, but change back when they're back to a 'baseline'.
LEVEL 5: Near the point of no return. Characters at 5 behave erratically, and may attempt to hurt others while seriously affected by their own overwhelming negative emotions. While in this state, the negative emotions are constant - with barely any downtime to rest. Characters in this state cannot be calmed down, and attempts to cure them with magic will only be effective for a brief period of time (5 minutes, maximum) before they snap back to their previous state. Their irises will be dark purple at all times, and may sometimes leak a black, thick, tar-like liquid from their eyes. Any magic they attempt to do will also be akin to a direct hit of miasma along with the normal 'effects' of it, sans healing or purifying spells which will refuse to work in general.
