TEST DRIVE MEME

This is the test drive meme for The Resort. Feel free to use this to voicetest, gather samples for your potential app, or just have fun in the setting! Reserves open on November 9th. Hit up our Round FAQ with any other questions.

Feel free to come up with your own scenarios as well! This is just a sampling of scenarios that may come up during gameplay.

1. MORNING WAKEUP CALL

You wake up with a start in a hotel room - one with a single bed and it's own bathroom - due to the buzzing of an alarm on a Tablet by the bedside. You're in the clothes you last remember being in, but you sure as hell don't remember checking into a hotel or resort for the night...

There's a message from 'Resort Staff' after you manage to turn off the horrible noise, letting you know there's breakfast for all of the guests down at the Restaurant.

It's 7am, but if you don't ignore it and go back to sleep, there's a continental breakfast buffet spread out at the Restaurant, just like they said there would be. It's all free of charge, too...which is good, because you certainly didn't pay to come here. Maybe getting some breakfast first before demanding to see the management is a good idea - and you can also find out who else got brought here against their will, too.

2. RESORT EXPLORING

So, after your meal (or just more sleep), you're bright eyed, bushy tailed, ready to take on the day and find out what the hell is going on. However, the Staff is all cheerful but evasive, saying that you signed in last night, and even helpfully showing you your signature in their guestbook. And while you know that's a crock of bullshit, they're very insistent that you're here for a week stay...

If you decide to check the Resort out, you'll quickly find that the upper floors are currently undergoing maintenance. But, there's a Ski shop nearby - which isn't surprising, considering that the outdoor courtyard is snowed in. There's also an indoor pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi in case you want to soak in style! And there's a bathing suit in your room, along with a change of clothing...

There's also plenty of empty or unused rooms, oddly enough. Though the strangest thing about this entire hotel is all of the rats. They're all clean, tame, and friendly - but it's downright odd to see a bunch of multi-colored rats skittering about either in special sectioned off areas for them, or up in tubes on the walls, much like a really elaborate hamster run. If you decide to go near them in a sectioned off area, they'll happily just hang out with you doing rat things. Huh. And as long as you're friendly with them, nothing seems to happen. But if you're unfriendly...?

Well. Maybe some things are better left untried.

3. SKI TIME

So you've explored the hotel and seen all the sights you could. Now you're ready to brave the slopes with whatever equipment you took from the Ski shop (all free of charge, again), and have some FUN! Or just see what the outside is like in this weird place you found yourself in, either or. It's cold, but not too cold - and the snow outside is perfect for skiing and sledding. There are three slopes, all ranging from bunny to advanced, and there's even a Ski lift for you to get up there on! If you don't want to go on the slopes, there are some smaller hills to sled down on.

3-A. SKI.....TIME...?

It happens before you can even realize it. You're having a grand old time down on one of the slopes, going at a high speed, wind in your hair and the snowy landscape whizzing by you. It's perfect, except -

- hang on -

What the fuck is that?!

You manage to dodge it in time, but it simply follows after you at a high rate of speed, scraggly arms and legs flailing as it skitters across the snow. Out of the corner of your eye, you see an unlucky skiier get eaten in a single gulp, the horrifying creature barely stopping before beginning to chase you again.

It seems you'll have to ski for your life.

4. FOREST BREAKOUT

Alright, you're done with Skiing and this weird-ass Resort. It's time to brave the wilderness and get the hell out of this place. As you go into the forest, for a while, it's just you and the snow... But then it gets darker. And darker. And there's no end to the forest itself...

You hear whispers. Wolves growl and snarl in your ears, the trees - are they moving? Has a dense fog settled in, making it hard to tell where you're going? Why...why is there another set of footprints in the snow next to you? Your ears are ringing, your head hurts, y̝ơ͍̻̲̥̟u'̰͈̯̞̖̪͜v͙͚̙̘̲̝̖͢e̖̲̟̟̮̯ ̖̙͟m̗͙͍̙͢a̷̬̹̠̬d̡̼͙̳̭ͅe͏̱ ̖͔̠̭̺̬͝ͅá̯̪ ̹̻̠͖m̥̜̫̤̯i̘̲͈̼̮s̼̙͔͎̠̦̘t̪͠á͇̣̫͎̜̻k̫͎̠̫̦̻é̯-͓͍͘

And then you wake up on one of the hotel couches in the lobby, with a Staff Member smiling indulgently over you with a cup of hot cocoa in their hands, going on about how you just came right in and took a nap.

Hm.

5. RESORT MURDER

Somehow, you knew it was going to get worse. And when one of your fellow Guests end up dead, that just cemented it for you. Someone has been killed - in a horrible way - and now you have to suspect each other. Will you check out the body? Mourn for the dead? Or lay a critical eye on your fellow Guests, watching each of them carefully for any sign of Otherness? That person in the corner of the room - did their neck just bulge unnaturally a little? Are those fangs shining in that person's mouth? What about the people in the rooms next to yours? Don't you think they talk a little weirdly, move just a little unnaturally?

Will you do something about it, before they get you?

[ like honestly that's fair.

The way Akechi's shoulders jerk when he hears his name from that mouth is -- it wasn't a wince. It wasn't.

You might expect more edge, but the way he looks over his shoulder is honestly just kind of distant and tired. ]

Haven't you done enough?

[Akira's expression, on the other hand, is stony and neutral. and purposefully so]

I haven't done anything.

[. . . well. not here, anyway]

And I don't know what's going on here, either. Not really.

But I'd like to talk.

[ One of his hands curls spasmodically into a fist.

flatly: ]

No. I don't owe you a damn thing.

[his eyes narrow for just a moment, because he can't help but think-- remember when you tried to kill me? remember when you killed Haru's dad? remember when you killed Futaba's mom? but the first one on that list, at least, is water under the bridge]

[the second two. . . well. that's a separate issue entirely]

I never said you did.

[still. . . he acknowledges that he has no actual expectations, here]

But in case you haven't realized, this is an awfully small hotel.

[ In a way, in a soul deep way, he knows his penance isn't yet paid.

But in the way that makes him want Akira to shut up and leave him alone, he thinks, I already died for you.

...

but.

Akechi's expression is hard and unmovable as stone, but-- ]

... assuming I permitted this farce to continue, what could we possibly have to discuss?

[a deep breath in. . .]

Where we go from here.

[and a deep breath out. that seems like a good place to start. asking questions like. . . a) why they're here in the first place, b) how Akechi is here, when he's supposed to be dead, and c) how the hell they're supposed to get out, are all useless if they can't, at the very least, coexist. or tie up some of the loose threads that were left hanging]

[. . . and Akira would prefer to tie up some of those loose threads, if he was being completely honest. the way things had ended had always left a bad taste in his mouth. if Akechi-- somehow still alive, somehow still breathing, somehow still standing in front of him as though he hadn't been shot by a cognitive replica of himself-- is bitter about it, Akira would hardly blame him]

[ ...

his gaze cuts away.

cuts back.

every inch of his body feels tense, like he could snap and fall to pieces at any moment. he doesn't want to be here. doesn't want to deal with the shivering tenderness in his core that he recognizes as vulnerability and hates unthinkingly. ]

Fine, [ he says softly, after a long silence. his ears are ringing. a sigh tugs itself loose, and he just. god.

it was easy, wasn't it, that first time he walked into leblanc? ]

Fine. [ an even softer repetition. ] If we're to be stuck here, we might as well get this out of the way.

[something flows from Akira's shoulders, tension that sat atop of them out of a mild fear that Akechi would continue to be belligerent. call Akira crazy, but. . . he sure was tired of being on opposite sides]

Good.

[he responds alongside an exhale, and carefully he lifts the rat from the top of his head, crouching down to place it back on the ground so it can skitter back off into corners unknown]

Come on. Let's go to the kitchen.

[he doesn't think they'll be interrupted there. plus, he can whip them both up some warm coffee to combat the cold]

[ Wordlessly, Akechi will step up beside him. But he watches the rat go. His expression is indescribable. It's a physical effort to contain the shaking all the adrenaline coursing through his limbs wants to produce. ]

I can't believe you put that thing in your hair.

[and Akira shrugs, perfectly casual, before he starts to make his way towards the kitchen. and yes, that involves showing Akechi his back. but he thinks. . . that's probably okay]

[for now, anyway]

It was perfectly clean and well-groomed. [SO] And as you know, I'm a man who likes to live on the edge.

[ no knives are produced. there are no sudden movements. instead, it's simply the two of them walking.

almost like...

...

well, like nothing, really.

gives him a sideways look. ]

I know no one else who would see a horde of multicolored rats and decide the best place for one would be his hair, true. But I suppose a rat's nest is fitting for a rat...

[IS THAT AN INSULT ON HIS HAIR. . .!]

It's a lot cozier than, say, a mullet.

[staring right at Akechi, expression extremely blase, as he says that]

[ kurusu. ]

I'll be sure to warn the first person with a mullet we see, then.

[ ooh, snippy. ]

I'll point him out to you when we pass a mirror.

[OH, COMEBACK]

You shouldn't be so cruel, [ Akechi murmurs, his eyes narrow. ] Your hair isn't that bad.

[ WELL. hey how long can they keep bitching at each other ]

[WHAT A QUESTION. probably for as long as it takes to get them to the kitchen]

Ah. Thanks for the testimonial. "Your hair isn't that bad."

I'm going to quote you to my stylist at my next haircut.

[ He smiles without thinking, and...

... well, that's something.

Slowly: ]

You get haircuts?

[ with an air of genuine shock.

at least they'll arrive at the kitchen in fairly short order? ]

More than you do, apparently.

[ZING]

[. . . anyway, Akira is checking to make sure there are no chefs in the kitchen before he beelines for the coffee maker and the cabinets in which they keep their coffee grinds]

[ Akechi follows him more slowly, sighing out as they filter into the kitchen and glancing around. ]

It's well appointed, [ he observes, without real motive for doing so. ] ... coffee, so soon?

It's never too soon for coffee.

[said like he's imparting some kind of sagely wisdom rather than just, you know. admitting he's an addict]

[there's a pause as he plugs in the coffee maker, then pops the lid off of the canister of coffee grinds]

Same as usual, right?

[he's asking if Akechi wants it prepared the way he had it at Leblanc]

[ ... "same as usual."

Akechi's expression blanks out, and he regards Akira for a heartbeat of a moment.

Then he smiles, and maybe even he doesn't really know if it's sincere or not. ]

Of course. Same as always.

[ There's nowhere to sit, so he'll find a counter to lean against. ]

If you were anyone else, I'd bring up the concern that we might get in trouble for being back here. But that doesn't bother you, I'm sure.

[. . . if Akechi thinks Akira isn't noticing the wide array of expressions he's worn during their short conversation? then he's sorely mistaken. that one in particular causes him to furrow his brow, to regard Akechi in return for a few silent seconds]

[and then he exhales, and turns away to begin preparing their warm drinks]

You know me well enough, then.

[damn right he isn't bothered. if anything, doing things he wasn't supposed to be doing makes him feel a little better about being trapped here]

I'm impressed.

[ he's noticing you noticing, akira!!

... truthfully, he feels exposed. Off balance. But that's not an unusual feeling, when they're together--

much as he doesn't like to think about that, really.

Akechi senses bait that may or may not be there in the words "you know me well enough," and doesn't rise to it, keeping his expression composed this time. ]

Do I? Well, we have known each other for a while now. I'd hope I could at least make an educated guess.

[ something about his tone is very condescending... ]

... so what do you think? [ He gestures, a half-twirl of his wrist. ] About all of this.

[it's fine; Akira's used to that condescending tone, and he merely rolls his eyes as the coffee begins to brew]

[he swallows whatever sharp response he might've had and leans his elbows against the counter, fingers linked and pressed against his mouth in a thoughtful gesture]

I think. . . [he begins slowly, carefully. like he's searching for his words]

It's all a bunch of bullshit.

[oh]

[so much for saying something deep and meaningful]

[ Far from seeming surprised by that blunt answer, Akechi merely nods, the motion thoughtful. ]

Then we have roughly the same opinion on the matter.

[ ... ]

To be frank, we're both painfully aware I shouldn't be here at all, and yet here I am. And that's one of only a number of sinister things to consider...
